A fact that most people forget while furnishing their living room is the fact that living rooms have to be more practical rather than just decorative. Having useful stuff that you frequently use is more essential than employing a theme in your living area. The furnishings and equipment must compliment your personal style more than it needs to match the curtains or walls. However, it doesn’t mean packing the whole room with every thing related to your personality and interests. For instance, it is good to have piano in your living area, particularly if you are blessed with that skills, but piano benches and a sheet music cabinet can unnecessarily take up good amount of space in your living area. You can put the piano bench in another room when not needed. However, things would be different in the case when you’re having a LCD TV which your buddies love watching sports and shows on.

• Initiate the decoration process of your living area with a bit of brainstorming first. Jot down all the functions that are most expected to take place in that area, for instance, watching TV, listening music or even reading.
• Then jot down all the furnishings and equipmens you have or want to have in your living area, or some other piece of furniture you require for the activities you wish to do in your living area.
• After you had prepared both lists, try to find out one object that you wish to be the point of focus in your room. A point of focus in a room is something that catches the eye exactly as you enter the room. You can choose it to be the traditional fireplace, piano, an Armoire, a book shelf, a painting, a centre rug or a large screen LCD.
• The next step is the arrangement. This definitely demands a lot of ingenuity and imagination. Everyone has their own personal style and you are free to incorporate your style in your living area decorations. Though, there are some rules you should stick to in order to uphold the practicality and functionality of your living area.
• Keep the walkways clear, otherwise it will create difficulty to move around conveniently and your room will crammed. Same goes for windows and doors.
• Try not to fix everything’s back with a wall. It will bring a very one dimensional and plain feeling in the room.
• If the room is too large, break it up in seprate. You can use curtains or dividers for this purpose or you can just arrange the furniture of one portion in a very independent way from the other.
• Try not to make the room too crammed. Leave out all the furniture you don’t really require.
• Lastly, arrange the whole furniture such that it creates scenery around the focal point. It would be best if you can make the whole room seem like diverging from your focal point. This provides a very organized feel to the whole room.
