Best Blu Ray Titles
Sometimes consumers need to make sacrifices for the sake of new technology. When new DVD players first arrived, we welcomed the ability to skip to scenes more efficiently and we liked the extra sound options that included Dolby Digital 5.0 Surround. Now with the advent of Blu ray disc technology, we’re upgrading to receive bigger storage, bolder high-definition colors, 7.0 Surround Sound and better quality encoding. While the quality is the biggest selling feature offered to home theater enthusiasts, movie lovers get the added bonus of having more interactive features too.
Some consumers may feel irritated that they’re expected to buy a new machine to play new movies. Yet, the shift has been gradual to calm dissent and there are many great features that Blu ray technology offers. For instance, creators are looking at releasing DVDs with a re-writable storage section so consumers can download updated bonus material (rather than buy anniversary editions and subsequent releases). Secondly, top movies will be seen in higher definition and 7.0 Surround Sound (compared to the old Dolby Digital 5.0). Many people are choosing to buy the PlayStation3, which plays Blu ray movies and also allows users to surf the web, listen to music, store data and play video games.
Of course, not everyone feels these Blu ray bonus features are necessary. “I’m not sure if people really want games and trivia,” admits Shoot Em Up producer Rober Meyer Burnett. This feeling was echoed by The Digital Bits’ moderator Bill Hunt, who said: “If you want a game, you can get a better game, and if you want a social experience, you can get a better social experience.” DVD producer Charles de Lauzirika says that the real benefit of owning the Blade Runner Blu ray over the Blade Runner DVD is “superior video and sound.”
Perhaps you’re wondering which 2009 releases are must-haves on Blu ray, given that this format allows for so many bonus features. Disney’s “Bolt” is a great pick for those who watch movies made for kids. John Travolta and Miley Cyrus sing together, production crew runs around in giant hamster balls and you can even “create the world of Bolt,” choosing scenes, lighting and other components that were painstakingly assembled. “Transformers 2 – Revenge of the Fallen” is another excellent title to own on Blu ray, especially if you love action. Fans can view Optimus Prime in “augmented reality” as a holographic image, view a special website that lets them piece together the Matrix of Leadership to resurrect Prime and they’ll also be able to customize their own robot characters. By completing these challenges, they’ll be able to unlock an exclusive interview with director Michael Bay.
